Thing #6 (Creamed Color Ponies)

For discovery 6 I choose LogMeIn.

To be honest I had a hard time choosing for this. I wanted to do something I was familiar with how it worked so that I was not searching around the site blindly. However, I did not want something I already knew so much about that I wouldn’t be gaining any knowledge. I came to the decision when my husband gave me permission (as if I was waiting for it) to talk about him in the blog.

LogMeIn is a tool that I thought was just for IT professionals to use to spy on their wife and kids. Okay maybe that is the wrong way to tell you how he was using this site. It is a site that is for remote accessing. Basically (in case you have no idea what I’m talking about) a user creates an account and then registers their computer(s) within the site. That user then has the ability to access the computer from another computer as long as the computer is on or not on standby. This is not limited to computer because there is also an iPad application available.

So there I am at home alone while hubby is at school and I hear the noise of a game that he currently enjoys playing. I am freaking out because I have no idea how the computer is doing this since both the kids are in the back with me. Turns out hubby was bored in class and thought that since he isn’t allowed to clog the Internet at school, he would log in and play from there.  There was one other time that he thought he would log in and see what was going on in the house. I happened to see him log on and let the 3 year old play with the mouse so he couldn’t do anything. This was before devices that would allow such things as FaceTime, so we were able to pull up the camera and he could see how the kids were doing.

This application would be a great tool for teachers. They would be able to have an entire class on the computer and be able to help them without getting up from their desk.  I also believe that this would allow a teacher to monitor computers if they were out of his/her site. The program does not take up the entire screen and could be minimized when not needed. What happens if the teacher leaves his work on the school computer or happens to forget their laptop? They could access the files they needed from anywhere. Would this Web 2.0 application change the way teachers view their accessibility to other devices? How would YOU like to be spied on?
